      • Field report -- studying at FMK
      • by: Friederike (Germany)

For me as a student of Media Science the course offer at the Faculty of Multimedia Communication appeared to be very interesting ... Marketing, Social Communication, Audiovisual Arts, Design or Photography. And indeed, when you are going through the FMK-building U4, the atmosphere is somehow inspiring.

Unfortunately, nearly every single course was held in Czech language, only a few courses in Marketing were offered in English. That's why my semester in Zlín was not like I had expected it to be.

I hoped to take part in practical courses like camera work, editing, making short movies ... maybe to work together with Czech students on a film project. In fact, it was the result of communication problems that I couldn't join these courses. That's a pity for me and I hope that the complicated communication won't be a problem in future. For example, there was no introduction meeting of my faculty for the Erasmus students. Especially for International Students it would make sense because I was running from office to office during the first two weeks in Zlín, just to get the right information for my schedule.

But I also took part in the Communication Agency which is a part in the studies of each FMK-student and means working self-dependet on a project. Some of these projects are for example the student media event „Mixer“ or the contest „Miss Academia“. As International Students we had our own project within the Communication Agency and the work was really interesting. But this meant also not to work together with Czech students, unfortunately. In fact - as an International in Zlín - you are really separated from Czech students.

I can give you the following advice: if you are really interested in a course you should try to talk to the teacher. Sometimes it's possible to take part as an English speaking student although it is a Czech course.

I'm sure that for the coming Erasmus students the situation at FMK will be a lot better.
